The four Resident Evil animated movies are Degeneration (2008), Damnation (2012), Vendetta (2017) and Death Island (2023), in that order. For the full release-order route including Infinite Darkness, insert all four episodes of that CGI series between Vendetta and Death Island. It is a series, not a fifth feature film.

Resident Evil CGI movies in release order

For a movies-only watch, follow the four rows below. Their release order and story order are the same; Infinite Darkness is the only title that moves when you include the series.

The four feature-length Resident Evil CGI movies, in release order
Order Movie Released Main characters
1 Resident Evil: Degeneration 2008 Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield
2 Resident Evil: Damnation 2012 Leon S. Kennedy and Ada Wong
3 Resident Evil: Vendetta 2017 Chris Redfield, Leon S. Kennedy and Rebecca Chambers
4 Resident Evil: Death Island 2023 Jill Valentine, Leon, Chris, Claire and Rebecca

Degeneration brings Leon and Claire together during an airport outbreak. Damnation follows Leon into a conflict involving biological weapons in Eastern Europe. Vendetta moves the threat to New York, while Death Island brings the larger group to Alcatraz.

Where does Infinite Darkness fit?

Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness was released in 2021. Netflix identifies it as a four-episode CGI series, featuring Leon and Claire. It belongs alongside the animated films, but its format explains why some lists show four titles and others show five.

Including the series? In release order, use:

  1. Resident Evil: Degeneration
  2. Resident Evil: Damnation
  3. Resident Evil: Vendetta
  4. Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness — episodes 1–4
  5. Resident Evil: Death Island

Resident Evil animated movies in chronological order

For story chronology with the series, move Infinite Darkness to immediately after Degeneration. Watch its four episodes in order, then continue with Damnation.

Story order, including Infinite Darkness; story dates are not release years
Order Title Main story setting
1 Degeneration 2005
2 Infinite Darkness — series 2006
3 Damnation 2011
4 Vendetta 2014
5 Death Island After Vendetta

Capcom’s Resident Evil history places the earlier CGI stories within the game timeline; its Death Island announcement identifies that film as a sequel to Vendetta.

Are the CGI movies canon to the games?

Yes—the CGI stories follow the game continuity, rather than the live-action film storyline. That is why familiar game characters appear with histories that extend beyond these films.

The films can be followed without a full game playthrough. For background, Leon and Claire survived the Raccoon City disaster and later became involved in fighting biological threats. If you want the wider game chronology too, use the separate Resident Evil game order rather than inserting every game into your movie queue.

Which Resident Evil titles are outside this list?

The live-action films featuring Alice are a different viewing route. Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City and Netflix’s live-action Resident Evil series are not extra entries to insert between these CGI titles either.

When searching Netflix, select Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness (2021) for the animated series. The listing titled simply Resident Evil is a separate live-action show.

The four-movie count excludes the miniseries, short films, 4D attractions and game cutscene compilations.
