Tron Movies in Order: Original, Legacy, Ares and Uprising
Watch Tron, Legacy and Ares in order, find where the Uprising series fits, and see which earlier films, shorts and games you need before your next watch.
The Tron movies in order are Tron (1982) → Tron: Legacy (2010) → Tron: Ares (2025). Watch those three features in release order for the clearest introduction to the franchise.
Tron: Uprising is an optional animated series, not a fourth movie. Its story sits between Tron and Legacy, although watching Legacy first makes it easier to recognise the world Uprising is expanding.
Tron movies in release order
| Order | Movie | Your starting context |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tron (1982) | Kevin Flynn’s first encounter with the computer world |
| 2 | Tron: Legacy (2010) | Sam Flynn, his father’s history and a changed digital world |
| 3 | Tron: Ares (2025) | A new central program crossing into the real world |
Do you need to watch Tron before Legacy?
You can follow Legacy without it, but the original adds useful context. Sam’s arrival introduces the immediate adventure to newcomers. Watching the 1982 film first gives you the history behind Kevin Flynn and the returning names.
If you have time for both, start with the original. Expect a slower pace and a different visual style from Legacy, rather than the same kind of action film with older effects.
Already watched Legacy? You have not ruined the series. Return to Tron for the earlier context, then continue to Ares when you want the next feature.
Can you watch Tron: Ares without the other movies?
Yes, you can start with Ares. It introduces a new lead and a story about entering the real world. The earlier films add context to returning characters and references, so watch them first if that is part of what you enjoy in a sequel.
Ares is not simply another Sam Flynn adventure. Disney’s official film page describes a program sent into the real world and confirms its October 2025 release. Go in expecting that change of focus rather than a direct continuation of every unresolved Legacy thread.

Where does Tron: Uprising fit?
Uprising takes place between Tron and Tron: Legacy. Disney’s D23 reference entry confirms that placement. It follows Beck’s resistance to Clu’s rule inside the Grid.
There are two practical ways to include it:
- For a first watch: Tron → Legacy → Uprising → Ares. This introduces the setting through the films before taking the television detour.
- For story chronology: Tron → Uprising → Legacy → Ares.
Begin with “Beck’s Beginning” if your service lists the introductory episode separately. It aired before the regular series; it is not a bonus finale.
Choose Uprising if you want more time inside the Grid, rather than a complete account of everything between the first two films. For a movie night, stay with the three features and come back to Beck’s story afterward.
Where do Evolution and The Next Day go?
Tron: Evolution is a video game set before Legacy. Try it if you would like to explore that earlier period through a game.
Tron: The Next Day is a short associated with Legacy’s home release. Watch it after Legacy. Both are optional extras; you can go straight from Legacy to Ares without them.
Choosing the right title in your library
Search streaming services by the full title and year, particularly for the original Tron. Availability differs by country, so check local listings for the films or series you have chosen.
