Silent Hill Games in Order: Releases, Remakes and Where to Start
Find the Silent Hill games in release order through Townfall, see which stories connect, and choose between the originals, remakes and standalone entries.
Start with Silent Hill 2, either the original or the remake, if you want a standalone story. For the original connected storyline, play Silent Hill first and Silent Hill 3 next. The numbers make the series look more dependent on earlier games than it really is.
For a series-wide playthrough, follow release order below. The list includes Silent Hill: Townfall, released on September 24, 2026; the remake of the first Silent Hill is still a separate project in development.

Silent Hill games in release order
These are the principal console, handheld and PC releases, including the short standalone game and the dungeon-crawling spin-off. Years refer to the first regional release; the platform column describes the original launch, not every later port or today’s store availability.
| Year | Game | Launch platforms | Place in the series |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1999 | Silent Hill | PlayStation | Harry Mason’s story; play before Silent Hill 3 |
| 2001 | Silent Hill 2 | PlayStation 2 | A separate story about James Sunderland |
| 2003 | Silent Hill 3 | PlayStation 2; PC later that year | Continues the first game’s story |
| 2004 | Silent Hill 4: The Room | PlayStation 2, Xbox, PC | A new protagonist and central mystery |
| 2007 | Silent Hill: Origins | PSP | Prequel to the first game |
| 2008 | Silent Hill: Homecoming | PS3, Xbox 360, PC | A new story about Alex Shepherd |
| 2009 | Silent Hill: Shattered Memories | Wii | Reimagines the first game’s premise |
| 2012 | Silent Hill: Downpour | PS3, Xbox 360 | A separate story about Murphy Pendleton |
| 2012 | Silent Hill: Book of Memories | PlayStation Vita | Dungeon-crawling spin-off |
| 2024 | Silent Hill: The Short Message | PS5 | Short standalone experience |
| 2024 | Silent Hill 2 remake | PS5, PC | New version of the 2001 game’s story |
| 2025 | Silent Hill f | PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC | New cast and a Japanese setting |
| 2026 | Silent Hill: Townfall | PS5, PC | First-person story set in Scotland |
This checklist has 13 entries. It leaves out collections, demos, interactive broadcasts and regional mobile or arcade releases. Shattered Memories reached some regions in 2010, so a local listing may show that year instead.
Which Silent Hill game should you play first?
Silent Hill 2: a starting point on PC or PS5
If you have a PC or PS5 and no older hardware, the 2024 remake is a straightforward way in. Already have the 2001 original? You can start there instead. You do not need to play the original before the remake; save a comparison of the two for a later playthrough.
KONAMI’s introduction to Silent Hill 2 confirms that its story and characters differ from the first game’s. Despite the title, you are starting a new story rather than joining one halfway through.
For the original connected story: Silent Hill, then Silent Hill 3
Start with Harry’s search in the first game, then move to the third. If you prefer release order, play Silent Hill 2 between them. Avoid plot summaries of Silent Hill 3 until you have finished the first game.
Save Origins for afterward. Although it is a prequel, its background revelations make more sense once you know the story they expand.
For a different setting: Silent Hill f or Townfall
Silent Hill f moves to 1960s Japan. Townfall follows Simon Ordell on the Scottish island of St. Amelia and uses a first-person perspective. Either is an option if its setting appeals to you more than the older games; completing the numbered entries first is not a prerequisite.
Originals, remakes and the HD Collection

The Silent Hill HD Collection contains Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3. It does not contain the first Silent Hill or The Room. If your plan is to follow the first game’s story into the third, the collection alone does not complete that route.
Shattered Memories reimagines the first game’s premise. Treat it as an alternative take, rather than using it in place of Silent Hill before moving to Silent Hill 3.
How can you play the older Silent Hill games?
The launch platforms above tell you where each game began. They do not mean an old disc will work on the newest PlayStation or Xbox. Match the exact release to hardware you can use before buying a secondhand copy.
On Windows, GOG sells Silent Hill 4: The Room as a digital download. The first three original games need their own release checks; neither the 2024 Silent Hill 2 remake nor the HD Collection gives you all three. Buying the remake also does not include the 2001 original.
Should you play in chronological order?
The connected branch runs Origins → Silent Hill → Silent Hill 3. That is a useful replay order. For a first run, meeting the original’s mysteries before the prequel fills in the background is the stronger choice.
The rest of the series resists one tidy timeline. Silent Hill f’s historical setting does not make it the opening chapter of James’s story, and Shattered Memories has a different continuity. Release order is easier to follow than a calendar built around disputed dates.
Where do P.T., Ascension and the films fit?
P.T. was a playable teaser for the cancelled Silent Hills project, not a completed sequel. Ascension is an interactive streaming project rather than a conventional single-player campaign. Book of Memories, by contrast, is a released playable spin-off, which is why it appears in the table.
The films are adaptations, not missing pieces of the game order. If you also want that route, use our Silent Hill movies in order guide separately.
What is the latest Silent Hill game?
As of September 28, 2026, the latest released entry in this list is Silent Hill: Townfall. KONAMI’s September 24 launch announcement lists PS5 and PC availability through Steam and the Epic Games Store.
