Metro Games in Order: Redux, Exodus, Awakening and 2039
Play Metro 2033, Last Light and Exodus in order. Compare Redux and Saga Bundle, place Awakening and the DLC, and check Metro 2039’s release date.
Play Metro 2033 → Metro: Last Light → Metro Exodus. For most new libraries, that means opening 2033 Redux first, Last Light Redux second and Exodus third. Redux editions replace the originals in the same story slots; you do not need to play both versions.
Metro Awakening is a separate VR prequel. Metro 2039 is still upcoming as of September 25, 2026, so neither needs to interrupt your first run through the three released mainline games.
Metro games in release order
| Game | First release | What to launch |
|---|---|---|
| Metro 2033 | 2010 | 2033 or 2033 Redux |
| Metro: Last Light | 2013 | Last Light or Last Light Redux |
| Metro Exodus | 2019 | Exodus or a hardware-compatible Enhanced Edition |
| Metro Awakening | 2024 | Separate VR game; earlier story setting |
The first three follow Artyom’s journey. Start with 2033 to meet the underground communities before Last Light builds on that background and Exodus takes the journey farther afield. Awakening changes both the viewpoint and the way you play.
You do not need to read the novels first. In particular, Metro 2034 is a book title, not a missing game to install between 2033 and Last Light.
Can you start with Metro Exodus?
Yes, especially if Exodus is the game you already own. It is easier to follow Artyom’s relationships after 2033 and Last Light, so start with those if you have the whole trilogy. If you are already enjoying Exodus, keep your save: you can finish it and return to the earlier games, accepting that some of their developments will no longer be surprises.
Is Metro Redux a separate game?
Metro Redux is the collection of updated 2033 and Last Light editions. Each game can also appear separately in your library. Launch 2033 Redux, then Last Light Redux. There is no third “Redux” campaign after them.
| Library title | Story position | Play the original too? |
|---|---|---|
| Metro 2033 Redux | First | No |
| Metro: Last Light Redux | Second | No |
| Metro Redux | Contains the first two games | No |
| Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition | Third | No second playthrough needed |
Already own the originals? Those work for the same route; there is no need to buy Redux just to follow the story.
What does the Metro Saga Bundle include?
The Saga Bundle’s listed contents are 2033 Redux, Last Light Redux and Exodus Gold Edition, including the Exodus expansions. It covers the three-game mainline route; it does not include Awakening or the upcoming Metro 2039.
The Exodus Expansion Pass provides access to the DLC below. Check your library before buying either expansion separately—you may already own them through Gold Edition or the bundle.
Metro chronological order: where Awakening fits
For story chronology, use Awakening → 2033 → Last Light → Exodus. Vertigo Games places Awakening in 2028, before the main adventure in 2033, and describes it as a standalone game made for VR.
That does not mean everyone should buy it first. Choose Awakening as your starting point if you specifically want a VR adventure and have supported hardware. For a conventional screen-and-controller or mouse-and-keyboard playthrough, start with 2033. Awakening is not a VR mode bundled into Exodus.

Metro Exodus DLC order
For a first playthrough, use:
- Metro Exodus — finish the base campaign.
- The Two Colonels — adds another perspective on events connected to the main story.
- Sam’s Story — follows Sam beyond that journey.
Leave both expansions until after your first ending. Their release order gives you the context you need without interrupting the campaign to rearrange overlapping events.
Should you install Exodus or Enhanced Edition?
On PC, Enhanced Edition is a technically upgraded version of the same story, with different hardware requirements. 4A Games specifies a ray-tracing-capable GPU as the minimum for that version.
If your PC does not meet the Enhanced Edition requirements, install the standard version. The campaign is the same; choosing the version your hardware can run does not leave a gap in the story.
Is Metro 2039 out, and where will it fit?
Not yet. Deep Silver has announced a February 4, 2027 release date, with February 5 specified for some regions, including Australia, New Zealand and parts of Asia. It remains an upcoming game at this guide’s September 25, 2026 update.
Keep it after the released mainline games in your planning, not in a checklist of campaigns you can finish today. You can start with 2033 now without waiting for the new release.
