Silent Hill Movies in Order: The Two Story Paths
See all three Silent Hill movies in release order, follow the original and Revelation, and find out why Return to Silent Hill is a separate starting point.
The Silent Hill movies in release order are Silent Hill (2006), Silent Hill: Revelation (2012), and Return to Silent Hill (2026). Revelation follows the first film. Return tells a separate story about James and Mary, so you do not need to watch Revelation before it.
Silent Hill movies in release order
There are three released feature films in this list. The release sequence is simple; the character connections are what determine whether you need an earlier movie.
| Film | Released | Story connection | Where to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silent Hill | 2006 | The original film, following Rose’s search for Sharon | Start here for the original story |
| Silent Hill: Revelation | 2012 | Sequel to the 2006 film, following Heather Mason | Watch Silent Hill first |
| Return to Silent Hill | 2026 | A separate James-and-Mary story based on Silent Hill 2 | Can be your starting point |
Watch Silent Hill before Revelation
Silent Hill: Revelation focuses on Heather Mason and her father. Universal identifies it as the 2012 sequel. Start with the original to get their background without having the earlier story explained through its follow-up.
Is Revelation 3D a different movie?
No. Silent Hill: Revelation 3D refers to the same 2012 film. The 3D label distinguishes a presentation format; it does not add another sequel to the watch order.
Is Return to Silent Hill a sequel?
Return to Silent Hill is the third film released, but it is not a direct continuation of Revelation. It adapts Silent Hill 2 and follows James and Mary instead of continuing the Rose-and-Heather story.
Silent Hill story order: two separate paths
Think in terms of the characters you want to follow, rather than forcing all three films into one continuous timeline:
- Rose and Heather’s film story: Silent Hill (2006) → Silent Hill: Revelation (2012).
- James and Mary’s story: Return to Silent Hill (2026), the adaptation of Silent Hill 2.
Do you need to play the games first?
No game playthrough is required. Choose the film route above even if you have never played Silent Hill.
The numbering can be confusing: Silent Hill 2 is the game adapted by Return to Silent Hill. That does not make Return the second movie. The second released movie is Revelation. Use the full film titles when searching a rental store, especially if its search results also include games.
Has Return to Silent Hill been released?
Yes. Cineverse’s official film site gives its U.S. theatrical date as January 23, 2026 and now includes watch-at-home options.
That date applies to U.S. cinemas. Rental, purchase and subscription availability can differ in your country.
