Is Fallout 76 Cross-Platform? PC, Xbox and PS5 Explained
See which Fallout 76 players can team up, how Steam and PC Game Pass work together, and what the PS5 update means for crossplay and character progress.
No—Fallout 76 does not support crossplay between PC, Xbox and PlayStation. The useful exception is within PC: Steam players and people using the Microsoft Store/Xbox app version installed on Windows can play together.
That “Xbox app” wording causes a lot of confusion. Installing Fallout 76 through the Xbox app on a computer gives you the PC game, not access to your friend’s Xbox-console world. Check the actual version before buying another copy or trying to link accounts.
Fallout 76 cross-platform compatibility
| Player one | Player two | Can team up? |
|---|---|---|
| Steam on PC | Microsoft Store / Xbox app on PC | Yes |
| PC | Xbox console | No |
| PC | PlayStation console | No |
| Xbox console | PlayStation console | No |
| Xbox One | Xbox Series X|S | Yes, within Xbox |
| PS4 | PS5 | Yes, within PlayStation |
Bethesda’s PC multiplayer support page confirms that Steam and Microsoft’s PC versions share multiplayer across game modes. It is a PC-storefront feature, not PC-to-console crossplay.
Can Steam and PC Game Pass players join each other?
Yes, when the Game Pass player has installed the Windows version. Open the in-game Social menu, find your friend’s Bethesda.net username and add them. Once you are friends, use the join or team options for the live game. Do not assume their Steam display name or Xbox gamertag is the same as their Bethesda.net name.
Both players still need game access through their own store or subscription. Sharing a multiplayer pool does not grant a free second license. If someone is running a Public Test Server build, switch back to the normal live game before trying to join.
Does Fallout 76 have cross-save?
Not between PC, Xbox consoles and PlayStation. Linking them to one Bethesda.net account does not turn them into a single portable character. In particular, an Xbox-console character does not appear when you install the Windows version through the Xbox app.
Moving between the two supported PC storefronts is different. With the same Bethesda.net account, Bethesda says the following applies:
| What you are moving | Shared between PC stores? |
|---|---|
| Characters and progress | Yes |
| In-game items | Yes |
| Unspent Atoms | No |
| Season Tickets | No |
| Fallout 1st membership balance | No |
The distinction is set out in Bethesda’s character-transfer guidance. If your character is present but the Atom balance looks different, check the original storefront before purchasing more. Do not unlink an established account as a troubleshooting experiment; an account-link problem is better taken to Bethesda Support.
Did the PS5 and Xbox Series update add crossplay?
No. Native PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions arrived with The Slasher update on September 15, 2026. Older advice saying PS5 owners can only run the PS4 app is now out of date. Bethesda’s release notes direct players to download the appropriate native version from their console store.
The upgrade improves how the game runs on newer hardware. It does not join the PC, PlayStation and Xbox communities into one multiplayer pool. You can upgrade within your console family without assuming that a friend on another brand can suddenly join you.

What if you play through Xbox Cloud Gaming on a PC?
The screen you use is not necessarily the platform running the game. Xbox Cloud Gaming streams the Xbox-console version, so that session belongs with Xbox players. Installing the Windows game instead puts you with PC players, including Steam users.
For example, two friends can both be on laptops but still be separated: one has installed the Steam game; the other is streaming the Xbox version. Conversely, a cloud player on a laptop can be in the same platform group as a friend on an Xbox console. Check the launch method, not the controller or device on the desk.
Before buying a copy for a friend
- Ask “PC, Xbox or PlayStation?” “Game Pass” alone does not answer the compatibility question.
- For PC, confirm the Bethesda.net identity. Different supported storefronts are fine; accidentally using different accounts when moving stores is not.
- Use the live game. A test-server installation is separate.
- Keep access, currency and progress separate. A character appearing on another PC store does not mean every balance moves with it.
There is no crossplay switch to enable for an unsupported pair. If Bethesda adds one later, the rollout will need its own confirmation; a console performance upgrade is not that announcement.
