Is Elden Ring Cross-Platform? Crossplay and Save Transfers

Check which Elden Ring platforms can play together, how PS4-to-PS5 saves work, and why Seamless Co-op does not connect PC players to consoles.

No—Elden Ring does not have cross-platform multiplayer between PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch 2. PS4 and PS5 players can play together, as can Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S players. That is cross-generation support within a console family, not crossplay between brands.

If you are buying the game to join a friend, ask which version they own first. A PS5 copy cannot connect to a Steam copy, even with the same password. Here is the compatibility check to make before either of you spends money.

Elden Ring crossplay: which platforms work together?

Platform compatibility, checked September 26, 2026
Your platforms Play together?
PS4 + PS5 Yes
Xbox One + Xbox Series X|S Yes
PC / Steam + PC / Steam Yes
PC + PS4 or PS5 No
PC + Xbox One or Series X|S No
PlayStation + Xbox No
Switch 2 + Switch 2, both using Tarnished Edition Yes
Switch 2 + PC, PlayStation or Xbox No

FromSoftware’s platform FAQ confirms these groups, including Switch 2-only multiplayer for Tarnished Edition. The same restrictions matter whether you want to explore with a friend or fight another player.

“Cross-region play” is a different setting. It concerns matchmaking across regions; switching it on will not connect a PlayStation player to an Xbox or PC player. Buying the Deluxe edition will not do that either.

Does Elden Ring have cross-save or cross-progression?

There is no universal Elden Ring character that follows you between Steam, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch 2. Crossplay asks who can join your game; cross-save asks where your existing character can move. A “yes” to one would not automatically mean a “yes” to the other.

PS4 to PS5 is a supported exception. After bringing your PS4 save onto the PS5, launch the PS5 version and select Convert Save Data on the title screen. FromSoftware’s PS5 manual warns that conversion replaces any existing PS5 save data. Do not confirm it if you have a PS5 character you have not backed up and want to keep.

This is a one-way conversion into the PS5 version, not two-way syncing between PS4 and PS5 saves. Simply playing the PS4 version on a PS5 is also different from converting your character into the native PS5 version.

Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S use the game’s Xbox-family support, including Smart Delivery. That should not be confused with Xbox-to-PC progression: owning the Xbox version does not give your Steam installation the same character. Back up the save you care about before changing versions.

Compatible platforms, but your friend’s summon sign is missing?

Once you have confirmed that your pair works, check the co-op setup:

  1. Update both games, go online and meet at the same location in an area that allows summoning.
  2. Set the same Multiplayer Password. A Group Password is a separate option.
  3. The guest uses the Tarnished’s Furled Finger to place a gold summon sign.
  4. The host uses a Furlcalling Finger Remedy, finds that sign and summons the guest.
  5. Check the host’s area progression. Defeating its relevant boss can stop the host from summoning there.

The official co-op instructions describe this host-and-guest system. Regular co-op ends when the objective is completed or a participant dies or disconnects; it is not one uninterrupted campaign with shared world progress.

If you are on unsupported platforms, stop at the compatibility table. Changing passwords or repeatedly restarting the router will not fix that mismatch.

Does Seamless Co-op add console crossplay?

No. Seamless Co-op is an unofficial PC mod, not a way to connect PC to PS5 or Xbox. Its creator’s mod page describes a separate launcher and save format. Everyone joining that modded session needs the compatible mod setup; it is not the same as joining an ordinary console summon sign.

If your friends already play on PC, the mod addresses a different question—how much of the adventure you can share without the usual interruptions. Check its current instructions and protect your saves before using it. It does not change the platform recommendation above.

What about Shadow of the Erdtree and Nightreign?

Shadow of the Erdtree does not add crossplay. You can arrange base-game co-op with someone who owns the expansion, but both players need access to the expansion to meet in its areas. Buy DLC for the platform and base-game version you actually use.

Elden Ring Nightreign is a separate game. Its players cannot invite an original Elden Ring character into their session. Before buying anything for a group, confirm both the exact game title and the platform—not just “Elden Ring” in a message.
