Paranormal Activity Movies in Order: Release and Timeline
Follow the Paranormal Activity movies in release or chronological order, with clear places for The Marked Ones, Next of Kin, Tokyo Night and alternate endings.
For a first watch, the Paranormal Activity movie order is 1 → 2 → 3 → 4 → The Marked Ones → The Ghost Dimension → Next of Kin. That release order preserves the gradual discovery of how the hauntings connect.
There are seven released US/Paramount films, or eight if you also count the Japanese film Tokyo Night. Only the first six US films belong in the connected-family timeline below. Next of Kin is a separate story, and Tokyo Night is an optional regional branch.
Paranormal Activity movies in release order
| Order | Movie | Year | Viewing role |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Paranormal Activity | 2007 / 2009 | The original haunting and best introduction |
| 2 | Paranormal Activity 2 | 2010 | Expands the family connections |
| 3 | Paranormal Activity 3 | 2011 | Looks back at an earlier generation |
| 4 | Paranormal Activity 4 | 2012 | Moves the connected story forward |
| 5 | Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones | 2014 | A different group with important mythology connections |
| 6 | Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension | 2015 | Continues and explains more of that mythology |
| 7 | Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin | 2021 | A standalone branch |
The original premiered at a festival in 2007 before its wider US theatrical release in 2009. Those dates do not indicate two different first movies. Paramount’s franchise overview lists the seven US titles.
Want all eight, including Tokyo Night? Insert the Japanese film after the US Paranormal Activity 2 and before Paranormal Activity 3 in the release list. It is an optional branch, not a replacement for the US sequel; the distinction is explained below.
Numbering stops after film four, but the story connections do not. Keep The Marked Ones and The Ghost Dimension if you want the connected family story.
Paranormal Activity in chronological order
| Order | Movie | Main period |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Paranormal Activity 3 | 1988 |
| 2 | Paranormal Activity 2 | 2006; overlaps the original |
| 3 | Paranormal Activity | 2006 |
| 4 | Paranormal Activity 4 | 2011 |
| 5 | The Marked Ones | 2012, with connections to earlier events |
| 6 | The Ghost Dimension | 2013, with earlier footage and connections |
This is a rewatch guide, not a spoiler-free way to discover the mystery. Paranormal Activity 3 reveals background that the first two films initially leave unexplained. Seeing it first changes what you know when you enter the original house.
The main complication is film two: it begins before the original but extends beyond it. Later entries also revisit earlier events. Follow the table for a rewatch without cutting individual scenes into a different order.

Can you skip The Marked Ones?
Not if your aim is to follow the connected mythology. It introduces a different central group, but the events reach beyond that group’s own story. Keep it between Paranormal Activity 4 and The Ghost Dimension for a first watch.
Expect a different feel: its mobile, handheld perspective moves away from the fixed-camera surveillance of the earlier films while keeping the wider story connections.
Where does Next of Kin fit?
Next of Kin can be watched on its own. It follows Margot and a documentary crew investigating her family background in an isolated community, rather than picking up the earlier family’s plot.
Leave it seventh if you want to watch the franchise as it was released. If you are only interested in the connected six-film story, you can stop after The Ghost Dimension. Next of Kin is not required to explain that film’s ending.
Tokyo Night is not the American Paranormal Activity 2
Paranormal Activity 2: Tokyo Night (2010) is a Japanese sequel to the original, as its Japanese Film Database entry explains. The shared number is the trap: this is a separate film, not a Japanese title or dubbed edition of the American Paranormal Activity 2.
Watch the original before Tokyo Night. You can then explore this Japanese branch on its own, or leave it aside and continue with the US films.
Theatrical or alternate ending?
Choose the original film’s theatrical ending when beginning the continuing US story. An alternate ending is a different possibility, not an additional event you need to fit into the sequels.
If your edition offers both, finish the theatrical version first and treat the other ending as a bonus afterward. Extended cuts and 3D versions likewise do not increase the number of films.
Is there another Paranormal Activity movie?
A new film is planned, but it is not part of the released sequence as of September 2026. Paramount has included a new James Wan/Jason Blum/Oren Peli project in its plans for 2027 and beyond. Keep announcements separate from the films you can watch now; the stage production is a different format too.
Once you finish this series, our Chucky viewing guide separates another horror franchise’s continuing story from its reboot.
