Start with Child’s Play (1988), follow the seven-film original series through Cult of Chucky, then continue with the Chucky TV show. Child’s Play (2019) is a separate reboot. It is not a missing chapter between Cult and television.

All eight Chucky movies: original series and reboot

Watch the seven films below from top to bottom. The series changes its naming pattern after Child’s Play 3, but the move to “Chucky” in the titles does not mark a reboot.

The seven-film original Child’s Play / Chucky storyline
Step Film Release year
1 Child’s Play 1988
2 Child’s Play 2 1990
3 Child’s Play 3 1991
4 Bride of Chucky 1998
5 Seed of Chucky 2004
6 Curse of Chucky 2013
7 Cult of Chucky 2017

After the original films: Cult of Chucky → Chucky Season 1 → Season 2 → Season 3. The TV section below explains the final season’s split release.

This is also the original-film sequence set out by USA Network’s watch-order overview. You do not need to arrange the films by a character’s age or move individual flashbacks around to follow it.

The easy pair to mix up is Curse → Cult. Keep them in that order: Curse is not a fresh reboot, even though its title and smaller-scale setup can make it look like one.

If you are looking for “Child’s Play 4,” the next title to choose after Child’s Play 3 is Bride of Chucky. Continue by the full titles in the table rather than searching for numbered sequels that the later films do not use.

Where the Chucky TV series fits

The show continues the original films after Cult. Start at Season 1, Episode 1 and follow the seasons in order.

Season 3’s checkpoint is Episode 8, “Guys and Dolls.” SYFY’s episode coverage identifies that final episode. If your Season 3 list stops after four episodes, continue with the remaining four before marking the season finished.

You can start the show without having every old scene memorized, but returning characters matter. Watching the original films first gives those appearances context; a recap is a shortcut, not a replacement for the full route.

How many Chucky movies are there?

Count seven movies for the original storyline, or eight if you include the separate 2019 remake. The television show is additional viewing, not a ninth feature film.

As of September 21, 2026, the count here is eight released films across both continuities. In April, SYFY reported that Don Mancini was writing a new theatrical Chucky film. That is a project in development, not a ninth film you can already add to your watchlist.

Child’s Play (2019) is a separate reboot

The two films called Child’s Play are the main point where a store’s search results can send you down the wrong route. Use the year, not just the title, to tell them apart.

If you have only seen the 2019 version and want the continuing storyline, start with Child’s Play (1988). The remake does not lead into Child’s Play 2.

Does chronological order change the film list?

For the original storyline, release order and whole-film chronological order give you the same seven-title list. Flashbacks do not require you to split a movie into pieces.

How to pick the right version or collection

Before renting a film or buying a set, check three things:

  • Which Child’s Play? For the original route, the first film must be the 1988 version.
  • Which titles are included? Match the contents against all seven names in the main table, from Child’s Play (1988) through Cult of Chucky (2017). A set that contains Cult may still omit earlier films. Check the 2019 remake and TV seasons separately.
  • Film or television? A product with a season number is part of the show, not an extra entry in the film count.

Edition labels are another distinction. Universal’s home-video catalogue includes unrated versions of Cult of Chucky. These are editions of the seventh film, not separate sequels to watch one after another.

Quick questions before you start

Can I skip Bride or Seed of Chucky?

For the continuing story, keep both. Their stronger comedy angle can feel like a detour from the earlier horror films, but they are still parts four and five of the same series. Skipping them leaves introductions and relationships for the later films to fill in.

Are Child’s Play and Chucky the same series?

Yes. Child’s Play 3 is followed by Bride of Chucky; that title change continues the original film series.

Does Curse of Chucky start a reboot?

No. Curse of Chucky is film 6 of the original storyline, followed by Cult. The separate reboot is Child’s Play (2019).
