Escape Room Movies in Order: Films and Alternate Cuts
Watch Sony’s two Escape Room movies in order, distinguish the unrelated 2017 films, and choose the theatrical or alternate extended cut of film 2.
For Sony’s Escape Room series, watch Escape Room (2019), then Escape Room: Tournament of Champions (2021). The earlier movies called Escape Room are unrelated, not prequels. Tournament of Champions also has an extended cut, but that is another version of the second film—not Escape Room 3.
The Escape Room series in release order
The connected Sony/Columbia series begins in 2019. Both films are directed by Adam Robitel and feature Taylor Russell and Logan Miller, which makes them easier to distinguish from the other films with the same name.
| Order | Official title | Released | Identification |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Escape Room | 2019 | Adam Robitel; Taylor Russell and Logan Miller |
| 2 | Escape Room: Tournament of Champions | 2021 | The sequel; also labeled Escape Room 2 in some markets |
Escape Room 2 and Escape Room 2: Tournament of Champions can identify the same 2021 sequel. Check the subtitle and year; the two films below from 2017 belong to neither watch step.

Trap and story reveals from the 2019 film.
Do you need to watch Escape Room before Tournament of Champions?
Start with the 2019 film. Sony identifies Tournament of Champions as its sequel, rather than a new standalone version of the same premise. Watching in that order gives you the setup before the continuation and avoids learning about the first film through the second.
Which Tournament of Champions cut should you choose?
For a first watch, start with the theatrical cut: it follows the version originally released in cinemas. Choose the extended cut if you specifically want the alternative beginning and ending, or return to it later to compare. Either version fills the second-film slot; you do not need to watch both.
The extended-cut listing specifies an alternate beginning and ending. Choose by the cut label as well as runtime: this is a different version of film 2, not simply the theatrical cut with extra scenes.
| Version | Listed runtime | What the label means |
|---|---|---|
| Theatrical cut | 1 hour 28 minutes | The cinema version of film 2 |
| Extended cut | 1 hour 36 minutes | An alternative version with a different beginning and ending |

Are the 2017 Escape Room films connected?
No. There are two different films you may encounter under the 2017 label, and neither is a prequel to Sony’s 2019 movie. Use the filmmaker and cast to identify them; the shared title and year are not enough.
| Title label | Director | Identifying cast |
|---|---|---|
| Escape Room (2017) | Will Wernick | Evan Williams, Elisabeth Hower |
| Escape Room (2017 in the FSK catalog) | Peter Dukes | Skeet Ulrich, Sean Young |
Apple TV lists Wernick’s film under its 2017 release year. The German ratings body FSK identifies the Dukes film as Escape Room – Tödliche Spiele, with the original title Escape Room. Its 2017 catalog year is not a claim that every country released it that year.
Is there an Escape Room 3?
There is no third released entry in Sony’s Escape Room movie catalog as of September 11, 2026. The connected watchlist remains the 2019 film and Tournament of Champions (2021). The extended cut is still film 2, and the unrelated 2017 movies are not a third chapter.
This does not establish that a future sequel is canceled. A release date would need confirmation from Sony before it belongs on this watchlist.
How to avoid renting the wrong Escape Room
Before renting, match year → cast → cut label. For the 2021 sequel, select Theatrical for a first watch, or Extended to explore the alternative story version. Different endings do not mean you missed a third film.
