Watch the original Castlevania series from Season 1 through Season 4, then watch Castlevania: Nocturne Seasons 1 and 2. Nocturne follows a later generation in the same animated universe. You do not need to play the games, and there are no required movies to insert between these seasons.

Castlevania watch order at a glance

This route covers two separate Netflix series: four seasons of Castlevania, followed by two seasons of Castlevania: Nocturne. Nocturne restarts its own season numbering at 1.

Both Castlevania series in viewing order
Order Series and season Episodes
1 Castlevania — Season 1 4
2 Castlevania — Season 2 8
3 Castlevania — Season 3 10
4 Castlevania — Season 4 10
5 Castlevania: Nocturne — Season 1 8
6 Castlevania: Nocturne — Season 2 8

That is 32 episodes in the original series and 16 in the two listed Nocturne seasons: 48 episodes total. After the original Season 4, open the separate Nocturne listing rather than searching for an original-series Season 5.

The original show premiered on July 7, 2017, and ran for four seasons. Nocturne began on September 28, 2023; its second season arrived on January 16, 2025. This guide covers the released seasons through September 9, 2026.

Is Nocturne a sequel, prequel or reboot?

Nocturne is a later-generation follow-up, not a prequel or a restart of Trevor Belmont’s story. Producer FredFilms identifies Richter as Trevor’s descendant and describes the animated universe continuing in a later century.

Castlevania 15th-century Eastern Europe Trevor Belmont
Castlevania: Nocturne France, 1792, during the French Revolution Richter Belmont, a later descendant

The 1792 setting is given in the Netflix series synopsis. The later setting explains the change from Trevor’s generation to Richter’s.

Can you watch Nocturne without the original?

Yes, if you want to begin with Richter’s branch of the story. Netflix describes Nocturne as a standalone series, so its Season 1 is a viable starting point. Do not start with its second season, which continues the first.

If you intend to watch both, the original first gives you the earlier characters and connections. If you have already started Nocturne, you can finish its current season before exploring the original.

Do you need any movies, specials or games?

No movie or story special is required between these seasons. Catalog trailers and season recaps can be skipped when following the story.

The games are not prerequisites for either show. If you also want to play them, use the separate Castlevania game order; it follows a different adaptation and release history.

Finding your next season on Netflix

Open the separate Netflix listings for Castlevania and Castlevania: Nocturne. After the original Season 4, start Nocturne Season 1; there is no combined “Season 5” to select.

After Nocturne Season 1, select Season 2. Check your regional Netflix listing for availability and audio options; the year on a catalog card is not a new reboot or an additional watch step.
