Start Monogatari with all 15 episodes of Bakemonogatari, then watch the three Kizumonogatari films, followed by Nisemonogatari. From there, use the queue below. It follows the novels’ order for the main placements, rather than the anime’s original broadcast schedule.

The unfamiliar names are the biggest obstacle at first. You can follow the list without memorizing the timeline or knowing what every title means. The story reveals its earlier events as you go.

Jump to the watch list, where to insert Hanamonogatari or episode-count differences.

Monogatari watch order for a first viewing

Follow these steps in order. Second Season has one planned break for Hanamonogatari; the section immediately below explains where to pause.

Your first-watch queue
Step What to watch
1 Bakemonogatari, all 15 episodes
2 Kizumonogatari films I, II and III
3 Nisemonogatari
4 Nekomonogatari Black
5 Monogatari Series Second Season through the end of Mayoi Jiangshi
6 Hanamonogatari
7 Resume Second Season at Nadeko Medusa and finish the season
8 Tsukimonogatari
9 Koyomimonogatari, all 12 short episodes
10 Owarimonogatari, first season
11 Owarimonogatari, second season
12 Zoku Owarimonogatari
13 Monogatari Series: Off & Monster Season, the released 2024 batch

Why put Hana in the middle and Koyomi before Owari? That is where those stories fall in Kodansha’s novel sequence. This gives a first-time viewer one consistent route to follow.

Exactly where to pause Second Season for Hanamonogatari

Finish the first two stories in Second Season, watch Hanamonogatari, then return for the remaining three. The story titles are Tsubasa Tiger, followed by Mayoi Jiangshi. After Hana, resume with Nadeko Medusa, then Shinobu Time and Hitagi End.

With the original 26-episode numbering, Tsubasa Tiger is episodes 1 to 5 and Mayoi Jiangshi is episodes 7 to 10. Episode 11 is a recap. Pause after episode 10, or after that recap, watch Hana, and resume Second Season at episode 12. Services that remove recaps change the numbers, so use the story titles when they differ.

Already finished Second Season? Watch Hana next and carry on. That follows how it arrived after the original broadcast, and you do not need to start over.

Bakemonogatari has 15 episodes, not 12

A listing that stops at episode 12 is missing the end of Bakemonogatari. Episodes 13 to 15 finish its final story, so find a licensed release with those episodes before moving on. Aniplex lists the complete series as 15 episodes.

Where Kizumonogatari and Koyomi Vamp belong

The original trilogy runs Tekketsu, Nekketsu, Reiketsu. Together, the films tell one prequel story. Watching them after Bakemonogatari lets you meet the cast before learning more about their earlier history.

Kizumonogatari: Koyomi Vamp combines the trilogy into one re-edited film, as the official announcement explains. It belongs in the same slot, not after the trilogy as a fourth chapter.

Choose the three original films for the full presentation. If you choose Koyomi Vamp instead, continue to Nisemonogatari afterward; watching both versions is optional.

Recaps, short episodes and split specials

Different counts often come from packaging rather than missing stories:

  • Second Season: its original run has 23 story episodes and three recaps. Add Hana’s five episodes and leave out the recaps, and a combined collection has 28 story episodes. If your collection already includes Hana, follow the story names rather than adding those five episodes again.
  • Koyomimonogatari: keep all 12 short episodes. This is a separate series, despite the similar names Kizumonogatari and Koyomi Vamp.
  • Owarimonogatari: season one may show 12 or 13 episodes because the longer opening can be split. Season two may show three specials or seven shorter episodes.

If an Owari listing is unclear, the first season covers Ougi Formula, Sodachi Riddle, Sodachi Lost and Shinobu Mail. The second covers Mayoi Hell, Hitagi Rendezvous and Ougi Dark. Use those names alongside Aniplex’s Final Season listings to identify the material.

Should you watch Monogatari chronologically instead?

Save that for a rewatch. Kizumonogatari happens earlier than Bakemonogatari, but later stories also return to earlier periods. Moving every event into calendar order changes when you learn things about the characters.

Broadcast order is another valid choice if you want the original anime audience’s experience. For a first watch, the novel-based queue above is easier than rearranging individual scenes and gives Hana, Kizu and Koyomi clear places.

Where Off & Monster Season fits now

Watch the released 2024 Off & Monster Season material after Zoku Owarimonogatari. It continues the series rather than starting over with a new cast.

As of September 28, 2026, the new Wazamonogatari arc “Karen Ogre” is announced for winter 2026. The official announcement does not give an exact premiere date. Keep it separate from episodes already released; the Off & Monster Season name does not mean every planned adaptation is available.
