Fate Watch Order: Where to Start and What to Watch Next
Follow a beginner-friendly Fate anime order through Unlimited Blade Works, Heaven’s Feel and Zero, then choose your next spin-off without timeline confusion.
For a straightforward anime-only start, watch Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works (the 2014 TV series), then the three Heaven’s Feel films, then Fate/Zero. This is a recommended viewing route, not a claim that the franchise has one official universal order.
The confusing bit is that some Fate titles revisit the same starting situation with a different story, while others take place in separate worlds. You do not need every spin-off before starting. First choose a route through the core story; explore another branch when it interests you.
Fate watch order for beginners
| Order | Choose this version | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works (2014–2015 TV) | Episode 0, then 1–25; both seasons |
| 2 | Fate/stay night: Heaven’s Feel | I. presage flower → II. lost butterfly → III. spring song |
| 3 | Fate/Zero (2011–2012) | Both seasons, 25 episodes altogether |
Do not skip Unlimited Blade Works episode 0. It is a prologue from another viewpoint, not a recap. Some services group it separately. Also check the year and format: the 2010 Unlimited Blade Works movie is a condensed adaptation, not a film you must watch before the 2014 TV series.
The TV series has space to introduce the conflict and cast. Heaven’s Feel then takes the shared setup in another direction and works better once those foundations are familiar. Zero looks back at the preceding conflict after you have experienced the main story’s revelations.
Why does Fate/stay night seem to restart?
The original Fate/stay night visual novel has three main routes: Fate, Unlimited Blade Works and Heaven’s Feel. They share a starting situation but develop different relationships, choices and outcomes.
That means Heaven’s Feel is not Season 3 of Unlimited Blade Works. The films are another route through the story, not what happens after the UBW ending. Expect familiar opening circumstances, then substantial differences. Understanding that one point makes the repeated names and scenes much less puzzling.
The anime-only recommendation above is a compromise between accessibility and spoiler order. For the fullest version of all three routes in their intended progression, start with the visual novel rather than expecting one anime adaptation to cover everything.
Should you watch Fate/Zero first?
You can, but it changes which story reveals information first. Zero takes place earlier in the timeline, yet it assumes knowledge of parts of Fate/stay night and exposes mysteries that stay night initially withholds. Chronological order is therefore not automatically the least-spoiling first watch.
Zero-first suits someone specifically drawn to its older cast and darker conflict who accepts that tradeoff. The UBW → Heaven’s Feel → Zero route gives the stay night story priority. Neither route can preserve every surprise across every adaptation.
Already several episodes into Zero and enjoying it? Finish both seasons. There is no need to abandon the story halfway through because a watch-order chart says you started “wrong.” Continue with the 2014 Unlimited Blade Works series, then Heaven’s Feel.

Where does the 2006 Fate/stay night anime fit?
The 24-episode 2006 series mainly adapts the Fate route, with elements from other routes mixed in. It is not the same story as the 2014 Unlimited Blade Works series, and it is not something the newer show completely replaces.
If you want the broader anime route, use Fate/stay night (2006) → Unlimited Blade Works TV → Heaven’s Feel → Zero. The tradeoff is an older adaptation that does not keep the routes entirely separate. If you prefer the simpler introduction in the first table, you can revisit the 2006 series later, knowing it adds another central perspective rather than a sequel.
What should you watch after the main Fate anime?
Pick a branch by interest. These titles do not form one compulsory chain:
| Branch | How to approach it |
|---|---|
| Fate/Apocrypha | A separate-world Grail War; start its TV series at episode 1. |
| Fate/strange Fake | Whispers of Dawn special (2023), then the 2026 TV series. The special introduces this particular conflict. |
| Fate/Grand Order | Start with First Order; the short anime route is below. |
| Fate/EXTRA Last Encore | Connected to the EXTRA game’s setting and outcomes; not a beginner-friendly replacement for stay night. |
| Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya | A separate magical-girl branch. Start its first season, not a later movie. |
| Carnival Phantasm and Today’s Menu for the Emiya Family | Comedy and slice-of-life extras that are more rewarding once you know the characters. |
For strange Fake, the official series site distinguishes the earlier special from the television production. Do not mistake Whispers of Dawn for an unrelated optional recap.
Fate/Grand Order anime order: the short version
If that is the branch you want, follow the adapted story chapters in this order:
- First Order
- Camelot: Wandering; Agateram
- Camelot: Paladin; Agateram
- Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia — include episode 0, then the series.
- Final Singularity: Grand Temple of Time: Solomon
This is not a complete adaptation of the game’s opening campaign. Camelot and Babylonia are later singularities, and earlier chapters between them and First Order were not given equivalent full anime adaptations. The gap is in what was adapted, not evidence that you accidentally missed five seasons. The official Grand Order anime portal groups these productions.
You can leave Grand Order until you want that separate adventure. For now, the most useful check is on your first selection: Unlimited Blade Works, television series, 2014, episode 0. That gets you watching instead of spending another evening comparing incompatible lists.
